Funchal City Race with 180 participants in City Orienteering

Tiago Aires and Dana Honzakova win in the Elite category

The 3rd Edition of the Funchal City Race took place yesterday morning, December 1st, with two consecutive stages dedicated to the Parks and Gardens of Funchal. The first stage led to Orienteering at Quinta Magnólia and the second stage took place in the hotel zone between the Ribeiro Seco bridge and the Parque Santa Catarina.

The event scored for the Madeira Urban Orienteering Cup and the more participated in the 2022 calendar, with 180 participants from 5 to 70 years old.

The organization of Clube Aventura da Madeira set up the first stage in Quinta Magnólia, a demanding area for sprint discipline, with many details and options, which made it difficult to progress and choose the best options. Nine different rcourses were made available, with distances between 600m and 1400m.

One hour after the first stage followed a new challenge, which ran through the hotel zone between the Ribeiro do Seco bridge, the Pestana Casino Park Hotel and the Parque Santa Catarina, where the finish line and all the concentration of the event was located. Courses with distances between 1200m and 1900m contained longer options in the hotel zone and greater abundance of details in the Parque de Santa Catarina area.

Tiago Aires and Dana Honzakova, both representing Clube de Montanha do Funchal, won in the Elite classes, as a result of the sum of the scores obtained in the two stages that they also won.

Also noteworthy is the high participation in the easy and medium courses, open to the general population, which gathered around seventy non-federated participants. Registration for the 6 foreign countries represented, with athletes from Spain, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Sweden, in a total of two dozen participants. Thirteen clubs were represented at the event, eight of which were regional.

The event organized by Clube Aventura da Madeira within the scope of the calendar of the Portuguese Orienteering Federation and Orienteering Association of RAM had the support of Funchal City Council, Direção Regional do Desporto, Madeira Association of Sport for All, Pestana Casino Park Hotel and PATRIRAM.
